Seeing Images, Thinking Images
Most films are made up of images. Films are moving images, or so the assumption goes. But what happens when films begin to question the process of making their own images: when they trace the making of an image, the showing of an image, or even the very possibility and existence of images themselves?
It is above all within the tradition of experimental film that we repeatedly encounter works that do not simply produce images, but make visible the conditions of their own seeing. What does it mean to make an image? What does it mean to show an image? And what happens when films explore these questions through their own form?
Seeing Images, Thinking Images brings together films that engage with this cinematic gesture in different ways: with exposure and materiality, with the construction and destruction of images, with memory and perception, and with the political conditions of seeing. The films do not merely show something. They think about it.
The programme was curated by Sebastian Bobik, who will also introduce and guide the audience through the evening.
